Details of our Services

At FORESTRY OPERATIONS TREE SURGERY and TREE CARE we provide a complete service, including liaison with local authorities and utilities, and removal and responsible disposal of materials arising from our work.

Using our heavy duty towed chippers, we aim to chip branchwood directly into our vehicles. This keeps working areas tidy and helps move material off site quickly.

Tree surgery

Tree work, like many other professions, has its own vocabulary. Some of the more common terms are set out below.

Dismantling/Sectional felling
Removing a tree in pieces small enough to be manageable, often by hand, but also sometimes by use of cranes. This avoids damage to the surroundings and to property at ground level.

Coppicing
Cutting a tree to ground level to allow re-growth. A traditional form of woodland management for species such as hazel, chestnut and oak.

Crown Lifting
Removal of lower branches of tree to allow easier access beneath the tree e.g. to allow lawn mowing, or to improve views under the tree.

Crown Reduction
Reduction of the overall dimensions of the tree by shortening branches back to appropriate growing points while leaving as natural a shape as possible. Often done to reduce the extent of a tree that has outgrown its space, and as an alternative to complete removal.

Crown Thinning
Reduction in the density of foliage. This may be done to reduce the weight of the crown or improve air circulation within the tree. It also has the effect of temporarily allowing more light to pass through the tree.

Pollarding
The tree is cut at a level which allows re-growth above animal grazing level. Not recommended on trees not pollarded previously because it may initiate decay in the large wound. Not to be confused with "lopping & topping" at high level.
