2012 - A Year to Celebrate

Why not plant a tree to celebrate two of the most important events of the year – the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics?

Many organisations – schools, community groups, churches, and others – are making plans commemorate the Diamond Jubilee by planting a tree, or group of trees. The Woodland Trust is assisting landowners, as part of the official Jubilee Woods Project, in the creation of 60 new Diamond Woods. These will be made up of six million trees.

They are seeking people interested in planting these woods. They can be contacted at http://www.jubileewoods@woodlandtrust.org.uk

But why not plant a tree for your own personal reason – to remember someone’s life, or to celebrate a birth; for a “special” birthday or anniversary; or just because you feel like it!

One option, for those with adequate space, would be to plant European white elm. An article in the Quarterly Journal of Forestry last year suggests that these trees are largely resistant to Dutch elm disease. These trees have the potential to grow to around 30 metres, and would increase the diversity of large trees in the countryside. (Harris, 2011)

FORESTRY OPERATIONS can give advice on the choice of trees, and can source and plant them for you.

PS. Firewood  is still available in cubic metre bags, free delivery around Ross-on-Wye, and discounts for multiple bags.
